Blue Flag is the internationally recognised award for beach quality, managed in the UK by Keep Britain Tidy. It signals high standards in water quality, environmental management, safety and education. But what does it mean for dog owners, and does it affect dog access? This guide explains.
Not automatically. Blue Flag criteria do not require dogs to be banned. The restrictions you see at Blue Flag beaches are set by the council under a PSPO, not by the Blue Flag scheme. To understand how those work, see our guide to UK beach dog bans.
In practice, though, most Devon Blue Flag beaches do restrict dogs in summer. That is because Blue Flag beaches are also the busiest family beaches, which are exactly the ones councils tend to restrict over the peak season. Blackpool Sands, a Blue Flag beach, runs a full dog ban from 1 May to 30 September covering the beach and car parks.

As the list shows, every one of Devon's Blue Flag beaches carries a summer restriction. None are dogs-welcome-all-year. Outside the restricted period, most return to full dog access once the seasonal PSPO ends.
The water-quality side of Blue Flag matters beyond the award. A Blue Flag beach has demonstrably excellent bathing water, which is reassuring for dogs that swim, though drinking sea water in quantity is harmful regardless of quality. Storm overflows can still affect water quality temporarily, even at Blue Flag beaches, so it is worth checking our water quality pages before a swim, particularly after heavy rain.
