Devon's beaches are often the start of extraordinary walking rather than just the destination. The South West Coast Path links virtually every beach, and the estuaries and headlands give some of England's finest circular routes. Here are the best dog walks that start from Devon beaches. Several start beaches restrict dogs on the sand in summer, but the coast-path walking from the car park is open year-round; check each beach page for its rules.
From Saunton Sands, the coast path heads north around Baggy Point, a dramatic headland with views to Lundy Island, before dropping into Croyde Bay. Return the same way or leave a car at Croyde. Dogs must be on leads on the National Trust headland during bird nesting season, April to July.
From Instow Beach, follow the Tarka Trail along the estuary towards Bideford and across to Appledore. Entirely flat, excellent for dogs and rich in estuary birdlife, and it can be extended as far as you like along the long-distance trail.
From Bantham, cross the Avon estuary at low tide or take the seasonal ferry to Bigbury-on-Sea, then follow the coast path south towards Thurlestone, returning on inland South Hams paths. Genuinely spectacular, with great beaches at both ends.
From Blackpool Sands, the coast path runs south along the cliff tops to Strete Gate and the start of Slapton Sands, with excellent views and dogs welcome along the route.
From Sidmouth, head east along the South West Coast Path past the extraordinary red Triassic cliffs to Ladram Bay and its distinctive sea stacks. One of the finest sections of the whole path. Keep dogs on leads near cliff edges.
From Budleigh Salterton, follow the Otter estuary inland through the RSPB reserve, with excellent birdwatching and easy walking. Return the same way or loop through Otterton village.
