Overview

Sandy Bay lives up to its name with a sheltered half-mile stretch of fine sand near Exmouth, privately owned but open to the public. The bay's sheltered position between rocky headlands provides calmer conditions than the main Exmouth beach, making it popular with families. The distinctive red sandstone cliffs provide dramatic backdrop and some protection from prevailing winds.

Dog arrangements typically follow private beach policies, which may be more restrictive than public beaches, so checking current access rules is essential. The smaller scale and calmer conditions appeal to dogs that prefer quieter environments, when access is permitted.

Access is via narrow lanes from the A376 near Exmouth, with limited parking that fills quickly in summer. The private ownership means facilities are basic but the natural setting compensates. The location provides excellent access to coastal walking routes and connects to the wider network of footpaths around the Exe estuary. The beach's orientation provides excellent morning sun and spectacular views across Lyme Bay.
