Seasonal dog ban, 1 May to 30 September
Beer Beach has two zones. The eastern half is open to dogs year-round. The western half operates a full dog ban from 1 May to 30 September (all day, no time window exemption). The walkway between Castle Hill and Trevelyan Road requires dogs to be kept on lead throughout the year.

Overview

Beer Beach sits nestled beneath towering white chalk cliffs in a picturesque fishing village, forming part of the UNESCO Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. The distinctive crescent-shaped shingle beach provides excellent protection from prevailing winds, though the steep slope into deep water requires caution for swimmers. This working beach maintains its authentic character with colourful fishing boats hauled up on the shingle and daily catches landed by traditional winches.

Dogs are allowed on the eastern half year-round, making it excellent for dedicated dog owners, though they're banned from the western section between May and September. The matting laid across the shingle helps both dogs and humans navigate the challenging surface. The sheltered cove provides calm conditions most of the year, ideal for dogs that prefer gentler beach experiences.

Access involves a steep walk down Sea Hill from the village, with limited parking directly at the beach but a large car park in the village centre. The Beer Discovery Centre and nearby Jubilee Gardens add historical interest, while traditional pubs and cafés provide refreshments. The village's smuggling heritage adds character, with the famous Beer Quarry Caves nearby. The South West Coast Path provides excellent walking opportunities in both directions along the dramatic chalk cliffs.
