North Devon is a dog owner's paradise: some of Devon's finest year-round dog beaches, a dramatic surf coastline, and a rural character that feels undiscovered even in high summer. Here are the notable beaches, with the current access checked for each against our beach data.

Saunton Sands

North Devon · Sandy surf beach

The crown jewel of North Devon's dog beaches: a vast, three-mile arc of flat sand that welcomes dogs all year. The dunes behind, Braunton Burrows, are a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and give excellent extra walking. Parking is available at both ends.

Dogs welcome all year

Croyde Bay

North Devon · Sandy surf beach

A lively surf beach backed by dunes and the village of Croyde, with rock pools off the southern headland at low tide. A seasonal dog ban applies over the summer, so it is at its best for dogs off-season. The walk around Baggy Point to Saunton is one of Devon's finest coastal routes.

Seasonal dog ban · 1 May to 30 September

Westward Ho!

North Devon · Sandy beach with pebble ridge

A traditional seaside resort with a long stretch of beach and a pebble ridge. The town is very dog-friendly, and dogs are welcome on the beach through the year.

Dogs welcome all year

Welcombe Mouth

North Devon · Remote cove

A remote, wild cove reached by a steep path from the car park. Truly isolated, rarely visited, and spectacular in winter storms, with dogs welcome all year.

Dogs welcome all year

Instow Beach

North Devon · Sandy estuary beach

A sheltered, sandy beach where the Taw and Torridge estuaries meet, with calm water and a pleasant village backdrop. The ferry to Appledore runs from the beach in summer. Dog access is by designated areas, so check the beach page for the current rules.

Dog restrictions apply · designated areas, check the beach page

Combe Martin Beach

North Devon · Sheltered valley beach

A small beach at the foot of the valley at Combe Martin, with a seasonal summer ban. The valley walk from the village down to the beach is excellent dog-walking country whatever the beach rules.

Seasonal dog ban · 1 May to 30 September

After the beach: pubs and parking
