One of the biggest practical questions for a dog beach day is how far the car park is from the sand. With a lead in one hand and a bag of kit in the other, a long trek across dunes or a steep cliff descent can take the shine off the outing. These ten Devon beaches solve that, each reachable in 75 metres or less, with the closest just 22.
Ranked by the distance from the nearest car park to the beach. Where a beach has more than one car park, we show the closest.
Distances are taken from our parking dataset and measured from the nearest car park to the beach access point. The actual walking route may be slightly longer. See the full Devon beach parking guide for all 114 beaches ranked by distance.
Black Rock in North Devon takes the top spot at just 22 metres from car park to sand, remarkable for a proper coastal beach and a quieter choice that rewards those in the know. Torbay then dominates, with Brixham Breakwater Beach, Babbacombe Beach and Fairy Cove all coming in under 55 metres. The Torbay seafront geography, with town car parks sitting directly above or beside the beaches, makes this part of Devon uniquely car-park-friendly.
White Sands Beach in East Devon offers a sheltered sandy option, while Newberry Beach at Combe Martin is similarly well placed in North Devon. Beesands and Slapton Sands Monument in South Devon sit on the long shingle bar of Slapton Ley, where the road runs directly alongside the beach. Torquay Beach and Salcombe North Sands round out the ten, both close to good town parking.
A short walk or not, a little preparation makes every Devon beach day better:
Dog rules. Seasonal access rules vary by beach and council. Check the current rules on each beach page above, or browse the full beach directory.
Tides. Several of these beaches change significantly with the tide. Check the tide times on the beach page before you leave.
Water quality. See our water quality pages for the latest on each beach. A short walk to great sand is not worth it if recent storm overflows have affected the water.
