Overview

Torre Abbey Sands is a long, sheltered sweep of golden sand at the heart of Torquay, steps from the town centre. It is particularly popular for families and sunbathers, with lifeguards present in summer and smooth sand good for swimming and sandcastles. The promenade behind has cafés, amusements, and public toilets. Access is level and suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. However, dogs are not permitted from May to September, which restricts year-round visits for pet owners. The beach can become extremely busy on warm days, and parking fills up early.

Access is straightforward from the A379 road between Torquay and Paignton, with pay-and-display parking available but filling quickly in summer. The nearby Torre Abbey is Devon's most historic building, a Premonstratensian monastery founded in 1196 and now a museum set in 18 acres of grounds. The abbey's Potent Plants Garden celebrates local resident Agatha Christie, and Torre Abbey Meadows provides dog exercise space when beach restrictions apply.
