Devon Beach Parking Guide for Dog Owners
Getting to Devon's beaches with a dog often involves more planning than a simple journey. Many of the best beaches have small or limited car parks, and summer congestion can make what should be a straightforward trip into a frustrating experience. This guide covers parking at Devon's main dog-friendly beaches and strategies for avoiding the worst of the queues.
General Devon Parking Tips
- Arrive early: For popular beaches in July and August, arrive before 10am to guarantee a space. Many beach car parks fill completely by mid-morning on sunny summer days.
- Pay and display: Most Devon beach car parks are pay-and-display. Coins or card (via RingGo or similar apps) are accepted at most modern car parks.
- National Trust membership: Several of Devon's best beaches are National Trust properties. NT members park free at NT-managed car parks. If you visit Devon beaches regularly, membership pays for itself quickly.
- Park-and-ride: Exmouth and some other towns have seasonal park-and-ride schemes. These can save significant stress in peak season.
Parking at Key Dog Beaches
Saunton Sands
Large car park at the Saunton Sands Hotel end. Pay-and-display. Can fill in peak season, so arrive before 10am on summer weekends. Overflow parking available in nearby Saunton village. See the Saunton Sands beach page for current details.
Croyde Bay
Multiple car parks in and around Croyde village. Busy in summer, as Croyde is extremely popular and the lanes are narrow. Consider parking further out and walking in. A shuttle bus runs during peak season from a larger overflow car park. See the Croyde Bay beach page for more information.
Blackpool Sands
The car park at Blackpool Sands is on site (paid), with a café also on site. Can fill on summer afternoons. National Trust members parking free here is a common misconception: Blackpool Sands is privately managed, not National Trust.
Bantham Beach
National Trust car park on the approach road to Bantham Beach. NT members park free. Can fill on popular summer days. The walk from the car park to the beach is about 10 minutes. Dogs welcome in the car park.
Bigbury-on-Sea
Cliff-top car park at Bigbury-on-Sea, with steps down to the beach. Pay-and-display. Can get very busy when the tide is right for crossing to Burgh Island.
Rural Beach Parking
Many of Devon's most beautiful rural beaches have very limited parking. Always check the parking situation before driving. Arriving at a remote beach to find a 10-space car park full is frustrating. For beaches like Mothecombe, Welcombe Mouth, and Westcombe, mid-week visits are strongly recommended.
Our individual beach pages include parking information for each beach, including car park capacity, operator, and approximate costs where known. For walks that start from beach car parks, see our Devon dog walks guide.
