Saunton Sands

Dog-Friendly Beach in North Devon

Saunton Sands provides one of Devon's most spectacular beaches, stretching for three miles of pristine golden sand backed by UNESCO Biosphere Reserve dunes. The beach offers excellent surfing conditions and unparalleled space for beach activities, with dramatic views across the Taw and Torridge estuary to Appledore and Instow. The dunes behind support rare plants and wildlife. Dogs enjoy unrestricted year-round access across the entire beach, making this one of the premier dog-friendly destinations in Devon. The combination of firm sand, space, and dune exploration provides outstanding exercise opportunities. The beach never feels crowded despite popularity, and off-lead exercise is excellent throughout. Access via the B3231 leads to large car parks that fill early during peak periods. The Art Deco Saunton Sands Hotel dominates the southern approach and provides refreshments, while the northern end remains wild and undeveloped. The beach provides excellent surfing tuition and equipment hire, while the dunes offer educational walks highlighting the unique ecosystem. Nearby Croyde and Woolacombe extend the beach-hopping opportunities.
