South Sands Beach

Dog-Friendly Beach in South Devon

South Sands is Salcombe's premium beach, earning Blue Flag status for its excellent water quality and facilities. This sheltered sandy bay sits at the mouth of the Salcombe estuary, accessible by road or via the seasonal ferry from Salcombe town. The beach offers a complete resort experience with water sports centre, equipment hire, toilets, and beach shop. Dogs are banned from May to September, limiting year-round appeal for dog owners. However, the ferry service provides excellent access for those without cars, and the sheltered position makes it one of the safest swimming beaches in the area. The water sports facilities cater to all abilities, from kayaking to sailing. The winding road from Salcombe down to South Sands provides spectacular harbour views but can be challenging for larger vehicles. Parking is available but limited, making the ferry service an attractive alternative. The beach's orientation provides excellent morning sun and shelter from prevailing winds. The location at the estuary mouth means fascinating tidal flows and excellent opportunities for spotting marine wildlife.
