Preston Sands is a broad expanse of flat, golden sand backed by a grassy promenade lined with colourful beach huts. The sea is shallow at low tide and there are plenty of rock pools for exploring. Lifeguards are present in the summer, and the beach is wheelchair accessible with well-maintained paths. Facilities include public toilets, a beachside café, and huts to hire. Dogs are not allowed from May to September, but the green behind the beach is dog-friendly and popular for picnics. The wide sandy expanse makes it excellent for children and beach games. Parking is available on surrounding streets but can be challenging during peak times. The Victorian beach huts are a distinctive feature, harking back to the town's development as a seaside resort following the railway's arrival in 1859. The green space behind is part of the original flood plain that required significant sea wall construction in the 1860s to protect against erosion. The area connects easily to Paignton town centre and pier.
