Polperro Beach

Dog-Friendly Beach in Cornwall

Polperro Beach sits at the heart of one of Cornwall's most photographed fishing villages, tucked beneath the harbour walls in this perfectly preserved medieval port. The small sandy beach appears only at low tide, disappearing completely when the sea rises, so timing visits is essential. Despite its size, the beach provides an authentic Cornish experience with working fishing boats hauled up on the sand and traditional cottages tumbling down the steep valley sides. Dogs must be kept on leads between 10am and 6pm but are welcome year-round, making early morning or evening visits ideal for off-lead exercise. The village's dog-friendly approach is exceptional, with most pubs and cafés welcoming four-legged visitors, including the famous Three Pilchards, Polperro's oldest inn. Water bowls appear outside shops, and the village museum even allows well-behaved dogs inside. Access requires parking in the large car park a mile up the valley, with a seasonal shuttle service or pleasant 20-minute walk down to the harbour. The village maintains a car-free policy that preserves its character but requires planning. The Heritage Museum of Smuggling and Fishing celebrates the area's colourful past, while boat trips from the harbour provide spectacular coastal views. The South West Coast Path connects to dramatic cliff walks and nearby dog-friendly beaches.
