Ness Cove Beach

Dog-Friendly Beach in East Devon

Ness Cove provides one of East Devon's most atmospheric beach experiences, accessed through a hand-carved tunnel through the cliff that was created by smugglers centuries ago. This small sandy and shingle cove sits beneath dramatic red sandstone cliffs, offering shelter and a sense of adventure that appeals to both dogs and their owners. The secluded location means it rarely gets crowded. Dogs are welcome year-round, making this a favourite with local dog owners seeking a unique, quieter beach experience. The enclosed cove provides safe exercise opportunities, while the dramatic setting and tunnel access add excitement to the visit. The beach connects to excellent cliff-top walks along the South West Coast Path. Access requires a short walk from Shaldon village, with parking available in the village centre. The tunnel passage adds character but may not suit those uncomfortable with enclosed spaces. Basic facilities are available in nearby Shaldon, including dog-friendly pubs and cafés. The location across the Teign estuary from Teignmouth provides excellent views and connections to the Templer Way and other local walking routes.
