Mothecombe beach

Dog-Friendly Beach in South Devon

Mothecombe is a hidden gem on the privately owned Flete Estate, accessible only through estate land via a narrow woodland path. The secluded sandy beach sits at the mouth of the River Erme, joining with Wonwell Beach at low tide to create an expansive stretch of pristine sand. The beach remains refreshingly undeveloped, with only an old boathouse and lime kiln marking human presence. Dogs are banned from May to September, but the nearby Coastguards Beach welcomes dogs year-round and provides excellent alternative access to the Erme estuary. The woodland walk from the car park to the beach (10-15 minutes) is part of the experience, winding through mature trees that provide habitat for various wildlife species. Access requires commitment, following narrow lanes from the A379 near Yealmpton to Battisborough Cross, then following signs to the estate. The large grass car park accommodates over 500 cars but fills quickly in summer. Facilities include a tea house and toilets in the car park, plus the unique option to hire a beach house for £100 per day where you can light fires and cook. The estate opens daily until late, but gates are locked promptly at 7pm.
