Man Sands

Dog-Friendly Beach in Torbay

Man Sands is a rural, shingle and sand bay, only accessible by walking footpaths from nearby Smallcombe or Hillhead, so it sees few crowds. Dogs are allowed year-round. The South West Coast Path passes along the shore, making it an excellent destination for longer walks. Facilities are non-existent and the marshy land behind the beach is a nature reserve, so expect birdlife and peacefulness. The beach shelves quickly, and can be choppy in strong winds. The nature reserve behind provides habitat for various bird species and wetland plants, making it interesting for naturalists. Access requires a commitment to walking, with the nearest parking a considerable distance away along narrow Devon lanes. The South West Coast Path connection makes it popular with long-distance walkers exploring this more remote section of coastline. The shingle and sand mix provides good drainage and interesting textures, though swimming requires caution due to the quickly deepening water.
