Instow Beach

Dog-Friendly Beach in North Devon

Instow Beach sits on the sheltered shores of the Taw and Torridge estuary, offering a completely different character from North Devon's Atlantic-facing beaches. The two-mile stretch of sand provides safe, shallow bathing perfect for families, while the estuary location means calmer conditions and excellent wildlife watching. The village retains its traditional character with Georgian and Victorian architecture. Dogs are welcome year-round across most of the beach, with only small sections restricted during peak season. The calm waters and firm sand make it excellent for dogs that prefer gentler conditions, while the estuary environment provides interesting scents and wildlife encounters. The adjacent Tarka Trail offers additional walking opportunities. Free parking is available in the village with easy access to the beach. The railway halt on the Tarka Line provides excellent public transport access from Exeter and Barnstaple. Village facilities include traditional pubs, cafés, and shops, while the yacht club adds maritime interest. The location provides spectacular sunset views across the estuary to Appledore, while nearby attractions include the Big Sheep family attraction and various National Trust properties.
