Elberry Cove

Dog-Friendly Beach in Torbay

Elberry Cove is a pebbled bay with deep, clear water, popular with swimmers, kayakers and anglers. Parking is a 15-minute walk away, so the cove maintains a peaceful atmosphere even in high season. Dogs are allowed all year. There are no toilets or café facilities, and the walk to reach the cove passes through attractive woodland. It is less suitable for frail visitors and families with prams, but perfect for visitors seeking quiet and for dog exercise. The woodland approach is part of what makes Elberry special, with mature trees providing habitat for various bird species. The cove contains the ruins of an 18th-century bathhouse, built for Lord Churston to allow private sea bathing. The South West Coast Path passes directly through the cove, making it a popular stop for long-distance walkers. The clear, deep water and rocky reefs make it excellent for snorkelling and diving, with seals occasionally spotted offshore.
