Charmouth Beach

Dog-Friendly Beach in Dorset

Charmouth Beach stretches along the famous Jurassic Coast, offering exceptional fossil hunting opportunities beneath dramatic golden cliffs that reveal 185 million years of geological history. The beach divides into distinct sections with varying rules, creating a complex but rewarding destination for different activities. The combination of natural history, excellent facilities, and stunning scenery makes it a premier destination. Dog arrangements are complex but generous for those who understand them. The western section allows dogs on leads from May to September, with off-lead exercise from October to April. The eastern section bans dogs completely between 10am and 6pm during July and August but permits access at other times. The central area has restrictions from May to September. This provides excellent dog access outside peak restrictions while protecting busy family areas. Large car parks serve the beach with good facilities including the excellent Heritage Coast Centre offering fossil hunting guidance and educational displays. The village provides comprehensive amenities including dog-friendly pubs and shops. The South West Coast Path provides spectacular walking in both directions, while the regular discovery of fossils adds excitement to every visit. The Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre runs guided fossil walks and provides essential safety advice for exploring the eroding cliffs.
